Mr. Porter is for rich guys

I received an email a while back inviting me to become a founding member of Mrporter.com, a designer shopping site for men. As the site opens to the public tomorrow, I thought I'd let you know what to expect.

Like most women, I often find myself in the market for men's clothes, what with Father's Day and a clothes-horse brother, so signing up was a no-brainer.

Alas, Mrporter.com is too rich for my blood, not to mention utterly impractical. I've never once met a man who'd wear a $325 sweatshirt and nor do I want to. I have to believe this site is designed for women shopping for men rather than men shopping for themselves, since the male genetic practicality concerning such matters would prevent them from purchasing anything. Sure, little brother would look pretty darn handsome in that Alexander McQueen cardigan, but I'm pretty sure he'd spend $1,075 on a long weekend with his adorable girlfriend before he'd shell it out for any one item of clothing, and this kid LOVES clothes.

Too bad, cuz I was ready to knock out Christmas, birthdays and Father's Day all at once, ya know, to take advantage of the promotional free shipping. Shyeah, a lot of different that makes when you're spending $3,000 on pants and a pair of socks.

  1. Mr Porter isn't a discount site like Gilt or RuLaLa. It's the full fledged online menswear store, equivalent of Net-A-Porter, owned by the same people, hence "Mr Porter".
